The volume mixing ratio measures the volume of a substance (the solute) contained within the unit volume of a mixture (the solution). It is the ratio of the partial volume of the solute to the volume of the mixture. It is frequently used with ideal gases, since, in this case, it has the same numerical value as the ratio of the partial pressure of the solute to the total pressure or as the mole fraction.

Example: What is the volume mixing ratio of a mixture of 230 cubic inch of a substance in 1 cubic foot of the mixture. Type "230" into the field behind which "in3ft-3" is written.
